OMG, the Rockewell SoniCrafter is great. I was looking for a corded oscillating tool and looked at the Fein Multitasker and blades, but it is just way too expensive to purchase for my needs. So I bought the Dremel and the Rockwell to compare side by side...

The $100 Dremel is lighter and a bit smaller but the buzz the motor makes compared to the Rockwell motor [a little bit heavier and slightly bigger] which humms smoothly is like comparing a Vespa scooter to a Victory street bike.

Since the basic Rockwell is only $20 more than the Dremel and the extra blades are about the same price, there was no question about going for the quality/durability of a Rockwell.

The only convenience problem that I can foresee is getting replacement blades:
Dremel is carried by big box hardware stores; hobbyists who do crafts on the spur of the moment and do not need to rip open walls, will appreciate the around-the-corner convenience.
Rockwell is carried by speciality woodworking stores or the internet; the Home Proj. kind of guys have to plan ahead before ripping into a wall for remodeling. So ordering parts in advance should be a no brainer.

I also really liked the Rockwell case, it is created with niches and screw-downs to hold lots of blades/attachments in place.

I looked at the Bosch 12v battery operated version, and that would have been a good choice but I do not want to have numerous 18v tool systems and chargers for the various power hand tools that I use. I read that the Bosch delivers 20 min of battery power and I might need more time than that between charges.

All four tools mentioned above have variable speeds pretty much the same: 10,000 - 21,000 opm. The Bosch details that I read boasted of 5,000 - 20,000 opm, but I do not know if I need to go that slow. If I did I would have researched more into the rare Praxon version of oscillating tool, which is reportedly underpowered and equivalent to size and weight of the Dremel.

I read the other reviews about this tool but I'm not impressed with the performance of the tool overall. The problem lies with the single screw that is supposed to hold the blades onto the tool. It is a single hex screw and they provide a hex wrench to secure the blades to the body of the tool. The screw keeps loosening up after just a few seconds of use. It is clearly a poor design. If I torque'd the screw any harder, either I will break the screw or the hex tool. Unfortunately I went on vacation right after I bought my Rockwell unit from Amazon otherwise I would have returned it. We planned on cutting wood and tile with this in some tight areas, but blade broke. Make sure your blade is very tight before using. Thought I was getting more blades but got more sanding discs. The biggest flaw with this tool is the attachment cutout or the design of the hole used to place attachments onto the sonicafter. The cutout on attachments are starshape with several small sharp branches. I found that this star quickly turns into a circle rendering the attachment useless when cutting into wood. This especialy happened on the endcut tools and scraper tools. Also when cutting or sanding certain materials the vibration loosens the bolt used to hold down the attachment tools. I believe this is happening as the star branches wear out the loose tool causes vibration. If you compare the cutouts on the attachments of the Rockwell to the Fein you'll see the branches on the Fein are rounded and longer making them more difficult to wear.
When the attachments are working this tool does a great job. It has saved me time and I have preformed tasks that I could not do on any other type of tool. Unfortunately I bought this tool to save money over the Fein but I will likely end spending more in poorly designed attachments

I purchased the Sonicrafter after not being able to justify spending $300 on the Fein Multi-Master. The Sonicrafter is a sturdy tool and will make short work out of most cutting jobs. I'm sure we have all seen the infomercial of the Multi-Master cutting through the nail. I needed the Sonicrafter to cut a nail that connected a 4 x 4 post and a 2 x 10 on the underside of my front porch (I could not get to the head of the nail to pull it out). It did cut the nail, but it took several minutes with several work stoppages to tighten the blade, as it kept vibrating loose. I used the Sonicrafter to cut through some planks on the porch and it did very well. I have also used it for detail sanding and it works great. Not having compared it to other oscillating tools, I don't know if the vibration is excessive. The vibration might present a problem if you are using the tool for an extended period of time. I have no regrets in buying this tool and can recommend it.

Please note that in my original review, I rated it at three stars. I gave it a lower rating becuase of the vibration causing the loosening of the cutting blade. This tool did a very poor job on the project I bought it for. Maybe it is meant for other applications.
I ordered this tool because I needed to trim the bottom of a cabinet to allow for a thicker countertop. I only needed to remove a small amount of material from less than 30 linear inches of soft pine. The cutting went very slowly, and I ran through the flush cut blade completely--the teeth almost disappeared! I tried finishing the job with the abrasive blade and the metal cutting blade, but ended up using a hammer and chisel. The blades are expensive, so this does not seem like a practical tool.

The one problem I see with it is that none of the universal blades can cut nails. I tried cutting a deck nail whose head had broken off with the sonicrafter. All I did was dull the blade and I had to order another one. I ended up using my Dremel to cut the nail. It states that it cuts non-pourous metals - which means it can cut copper (ie soft metals) but not hard metals - like nails. I wish Rockwell would create a blade for the sonicrafter specifically to cut hard metals. The Sonicrafter appears to be well made with a metal case for the drive end and sturdy, but not hard, plastic - which should survive numerous drops - protects the motor. The tool is easy to use - little vibration and relatively quiet (much quieter than a grinder). On/off is a flush mount slide switch and the speed is controlled with a flush mount rotary knob at the base of the tool. The blades are changed with an allen wrench which has a storage clip built into the base of the power cord (nice touch). The power cord is 10 ft. long and a velcro strap is included to keep the cord wrapped when not in use. The tool bag is well made and heavy duty, reinforced bottom, and has a zipper closure. A well made plastic case is included for the blades and sanding pads and all fit in comfortably. The closure on the plastic case is an actually hinged plastic clasp not one of those flex plastic hinges that tend to break after a short while. Additionally a spare blade securing bolt is included. *Note that in the kit 30 of the 37 pieces are sanding pads.*
I got this tool to help with rennovating older houses, especially to help putting holes in plaster/lathe for electric runs and boxes. A big problem with putting holes in plaster is that saws, either hand or power, tend to break the keys that hold the plaster to the lathe. I have tried the spiral saw bits (Rotozip type) rated for sheetrock, but they wear out extremely fast in the plaster top coat. Carbide rotary rasps work better, but also wear down quickly. I normally use grinders which are very fast and minimize the damage to the plaster/lathe bond, but they do create a large amount of airborne dust and noise.
The Sonicrafter (using the carbide blade) creates a very minimal amount of dust and very little of that is airborne. It is, however, much slower and I don't think the carbide blade will last to long in plaster. The wood blade works very well cutting the lathe. I cut the lathe vertically half way across a stud remove it and then renail them in when the work is done. A heavy coat of fast set mud as a base and a couple of top coats and the repair is imperceptible.
In closing, it is more the blades that restrict the tool than the tool itself. I am sure there will be times when the problem of dust production will outweigh the time and blade cost for jobs, but in general I will probably revert to using the grinder for cutting the plaster; using the Soniccrafter to cut the lathe.
If you think you have uses for this tool I would recommend it.

I bought this Sonicrafter for a few reasons, price being the main one. I seriously thought about just biting the bullet and getting the Fein, but couldn't justify the price for the amount of work it would see. The Rockwell name was another reason, but it was mis-guided. This is NOT the same Rockwell as the tool making company of the same name. I'm starting to regret my decision. It does work well making cutouts in drywall, but so does a $7 drywall saw.... When trying to cut off a piece of 3/4 thick pine, the blade smokes, overheats and makes for a poor cut. I'm not expecting a miter saw smooth cut, just trying to shorten up some baseboard. That shouldn't cause a problem, but with the Sonicrafter it does. The blades also dull quickly, they seem to be made of a cheap tool steel, or the heat treating is done incorrectly.

Using the semi-circle blade I cut right through the frames with ease. The cut was straight on the mark I made. Since the tool uses oscillations it was really easy staying on the line. So, this is my first weekend with 37-pice Sonicrafter. The job is to strip layers of old paint from a metal radiator cover. I mounted the scraper on, dialed up the variable speed to recommended high and went ahead only applying gentle pressure. After 5 minutes I had to remove my hand from the metal front area. It became way too hot to touch. As a matter of fact, I would never use any other tool at this temperature. To Sonicrafter's credit it didn't produce any smoke and kept turning it off every 10-12 minutes. Contacted Rockwell's Customer Service and was advised to exchange the unit. I debated whether I should just splurge and by a multimaster or save some cash and go with the sonicrafter. After reading all the reviews for both products and watching demos on U tube I chose the sonicrafter. So far I have put it to work on some serious DIY projects and it has done the job. Its great for sheetrock cutting. It did a good job of cutting out the hole for a pocket door hardware in an solid alder door. It cuts sheet metal and slices through nails fine too.

I have not had a problem with blades loosening or the tool getting real hot like in other reviews. If you go slow and let the tool do the work it works fine. It's not a Sawsall, use it for the finer work. Its not real speedy at cutting harder woods and if your blade is dull it will burn in woods like oak and maple.

I suggest stocking up on blades because I have only found them online. Just like a sawsall blade, they dont last very long, save your dull blades for cutting sheet rock and keep your sharp blades for wood cutting.

I purchased this 37 piece set and the quality of it is excellent well built and with the varible speed model very useful for different things that could come up. I own the harbor freight tools model and have for a short period of time also owned the dremmel brand, well I am a toolaholic and here I guess is my take on these three models, the dremel I thought was not real heavy duty made of thinner plastic than the others
and none of the blades are bimetal no nail cutting here!!!!! I wasnt impressed with durability of it one accidental fall on the floor from for say chest height would prob break it I wouldnt want to take this to a construction site, It wouldnt hold up in my opinion.
The harbor freight tools brand the cheapest one of all seemed to almost have a little more power than the dremmel but was almost scary to run cause it sounded like it was gonna jump out of your hands and blades for this model (harbor freight tools brand) the wood cutting blade didnt not last long at all!!! but at about 5.99 for a set of 3 different one might be a trade off. Well anyway on to the sonicrafter, it was the better of all 3 and the blades are heavier built than all three it sounded better built also had a great feel in my hands, now the only problem with this that I could see was that there bimetal blade if used on a couple of nails will decline in cutting ability real real fast I was disappointed that a 20 dollar blade wouldnt last any longer than that but maybe I got a bum blade all the other accesories were wounderful and I was well pleased, I would buy this again or recommend this to a friend but not for a metal cutter.

Read about a number of new oscillating saw products entering the market and the one that appealed to me the most was the Rockwell sonicrafter. The big negative seemed to be that it was not yet handled by a large retailer so blades might be hard to get. They are, on the other hand, readily available online from a number of sources. I was putting down a wooden floor in a bathroom and wanted something to undercut the door jamb. Thought this tool sounded good enough to give it a chance. Arrived in a timely manner and I started working on the floor. I undercut the door, then had to change blades and do a plunge cut in a plank for the heater register, then to the scraper blade to remove some of the old tile mastic from the new floor area and finally to the end cutting blade to make a multi-sided cut in the end of the wood where it met the wall and door frame. Got far more use out of it than I had planned. It felt good in my hand with its rubber coating and the motor ran smoothly, not bogging down or laboring on any job. Blade change was easy and the blade did not come loose when running. The metal housing between the motor and blade got quite warm during use but cooled down quickly when the work stopped. Never had a time when it was too hot to handle. I have never been a fan of the jig saw and this has taken many of the uses away from it. I did not use the grout cutting blade or the sanding pad but I can see some future uses for them. I am very happy with my purchase. I debated a couple of years about purchasing a tool like this. At first, Fein was the only option and just for home use it was too much money for me to justify purchasing. Now that there are reasonably priced choices, I purchased this 37 piece Rockwell kit. Honestly, I felt like it was a gamble. Many reviews say the blades don't last and they come loose all the time. I rolled the dice. I WON!!!

This is a solid tool. I love working with tools and I own a lot of professional quality tools. I put this in the same class as my Bosch, Dewalt, Porter Cable, Rigid, and Makita tools.

For $208 I got this kit and a diamond segment saw, a carbide triangle saw, and a blade cleaner. The tool and add on accessories cost less than half as much as those from Fein.

I immediately went to work taking out thinset from an old tile job, probably 1/4 inch trowelled. I had tried hammer and chisel and hated that. I bought an angle grinder which worked but threw dust everywhere. That lasted about one minute before I had to quit because of the dust. Then I threw a rug over it. That was a couple of years ago.

This Sonicrafter with the diamond segment saw is the right tool for the job. It is powerful enough. I used it for an hour, it did not overheat or bog down. The blade shows no signs of wear. The blade never came loose. It did not throw dust everywhere. After an hour my hand was tired. Operating this tool feels very much like operating a random orbital sander. The gentle vibration over time is fatiguing.

Get a variable speed model; the least expensive kit is not variable speed. The harder the material you work on, the higher the speed needs to be set. According to the manufacturer, it is running the tool on too low a speed that causes overheating and excessive blade wear.

Be careful when you mount the blade. Blades mount like a twelve point socket fits on a nut; but these blades and mount are thin like a hacksaw blade. Make sure the blade is seated on the nut before you tighten the mounting screw. If the blade is mounted correctly, it will not work loose. I have used three different types of blades and have never had a blade work loose. Just get it on there right to begin with.

I am more than satisfied with my choice of Sonicrafter over Multimaster. I used some of the money I saved to buy myself a new Stetson hat.

We purchased the Rockwell RK5101K Sonicrafter kit in January, 2009. Have been very pleased with it's performance. Have been using it to cut 1"
P-2000 insulation board. Does exactly what it was advertised to do. Would like to suggest to manufacturer to modify cutting blade to include a serrated edge along one side plus the existing "nose" edge. (Blade #RW9122) Would recommend to anyone. Very easy to use. Lightweight and comfortable to handle. We have not experienced any problem mounting blade as was mentioned in an earlier comment on this site.
